Invisible Illnesses

by Phronesus Disegno
 Age Group: Adult

Let me be happy and let me dance Let my life not have been in vain; For it feels I took that vibrant stance Through the drouts and flooding rain.
Abuse and assault from earliest years Have stolen every grace; Stuffing anger beneath forbidden tears Faking always a happy face.
Far away from it all by space and time It occurred I should begin Learning insidious causes were sublime, That my healing lies within.
With life awaiting, standing still I should have already died, And an earthy judge most assuredly will Be the one who shall decide:
Am I able to work, as I suffer and ail Or may I somewhat early retire? Can five doctors' documentation possibly fail? Does one judge think I'm a liar?
My life will end in a few months, or not -- From the choice of the judge, then by me; And it seems I have all the help that I ought A light, end of tunnel, I see.
Those "invisible" illnesses common folk deny They can't see them, so they always doubt. They must be so blissful that they can fly! Ignorance is bliss! That's what I shout!
So illness prevailed, the work has ceased, Life savings are mostly depleted. So I took this risk close to being deceased I'm too sick, all employment completed.
For it feels I took that vibrant stance Through the drouts and flooding rain. Let me be happy and let me dance Let my life not have been in vain.
Author's Notes: My Social Security Disability Insurance claim, after over a year, has finally been heard by an administrative law judge after the two common denials. I will probably get the judgement in early 2012 through postal mail, and it is common for it to take a few months after the hearing for a decision to be made. When I finally do receive the judgement, that will either be the end of my life, or the beginning of a new one.
In the meantime, please wish me well. I may write more poetry in the meantime (if only as a form of my own personal therapy!) , and will certainly write a poem once I get the decision. Everyone, including two of my doctors, seems to think I should not worry because I will get it. I am glad for that, but I just can't think very positively because I don't have the results in my hand saying I was awarded SSDI. It's hard to trust. But I have no choice but to wait, so that's exactly what I'm going to do. :-)
