The Young Mage Who Listened To His Heart
by Phronesus Disegno
Age Group: Adult
A Mage in training, his name was Girarde,
Spoke as he began his spell,
"What I have to ask is very hard,
But I'll try to do it well."
He had no money (at least none to spare)
So he had to improvise.
But his will to do good, his desire to care,
Was more than most realized.
"I mean no malice but I don't have a chalice,
So I'll use this plastic cup.
Would it still make sense without incense?
A cigarette might be good enough...
...How well will it work without a candle?
All I have is this little flashlight.
This butter knife is just as easy to handle
As an athame filled with might."
He raised his hands and began the spell,
And in a voice that was commanding
He wished for wisdom, and healing as well;
Most of all, for understanding.
He felt odd using those things as tools,
The plastic cup, the flashlight, the knife.
But he never was one to follow rules,
Self expression was how he lived life.
The years that followed were full of hope
Over time it all came true.
He helped his community within the scope
Of what Magicians do.
People came to him, not just for advice
They shared their life with him.
They loved him, he was always nice
Showing hope when things were grim.
He learned his lessons serving others
Never again did he feel alone
His family extended, new sisters and brothers
Oh, to see how much he had grown!
His honor had always led him along
It never mattered, plastic cup or chalace,
His heart was pure and his mind was strong,
And so life took care of the balance.
Author's Notes: This story is a fictional parallel to my own life. I guess I never actually needed the tools of the altar as much as I needed to just believe in myself and know that my presence in the lives of other people is important to them and that I do have an important place in the grand scheme of things.
Now if only I could think of a poem title that wasn't nearly as long as the poem itself! :-)
