The Magick of the Sand Plum Tree

by Phronesus Disegno

Age Group: Adult

The magick of the sand plum tree
It thrives amongst the rest --
Most beautiful when springtime comes
From nature's grand behest;

At first a glossy shine appears
Each branch forthwith abounding:
Unvaried sanguine deep maroon
Evoking life-songs sounding!

And on each branch, maroon with gloss,
Are buds, not yet one leaf;
Instead white flowers so petite
Bloom hundreds aperitif...

White flowers blanket glossed maroon
All branches base to tip,
So delicate and gossamer
Bees careful not to slip --

And slowly with each rising moon
Peek leaf buds out afresh
Caressing flowers as they fade
Inside their leafy creche;

Miasmal clouds relenquish rain
To quench each thirsty root,
As sunlight warms and bathes the tree
Commanding, "Grow ye, fruit!" :-)

As sand plums yield in tens of tens,
The heavy branches carry,
In perfect "plum red" color now
No larger than a cherry;

Found everywhere amongst these parts
As if without regard
The sand plum tree, in fact, I've three!
Alive in my backyard.

As nature gives all that exists,
Its sweetest taste to me
So native, growing wild here
Picked from my sand plum tree.

The gnarly branches twist and turn
From winter's chilling night,
The magick of each year's rebirth
Awakened by sunlight;

Most beautiful when springtime comes
From nature's grand behest;
Such beauty from a sand plum tree
That thrives amongst the rest.

Author's Notes: Addendum, for the botanical realists out there:

But watch out if a sand plum tree
Pops up in your backyard,
It's roots grow ALL ways underground,
Controlling them is hard --

And when the roots reach far enough,
Up sprouts another tree!
They multiply like weeds, you know.
No need for seeds, you see.

You cut them back, or dig them up,
But never safe you'll feel --
Like trying to shoot a swarm of bees,
And the roots are hard as steel.

The pavement cracks from all the stress
Each root assaults and snipes,
And if you wait around enough,
Bye-bye underground pipes.

Alas, at least, until that time
Feel free to fill your belly;
For never did you taste at all,
'til you've tasted sand plum jelly. :-)

If you want to see what I see, try the following Wikipedia link to read about and see some pics of the sand plum tree, or just do an image search on your favorite search engine.

Also, because the younger branches are a reddish color, they are not perfectly straight but still make very beautiful wands.
