Positive Attitude for Life Limiting Illnesses

by Phronesus Disegno

Age Group: Adult

Although I have many maladies,
That is, illnesses that are chronic,
There is one thing better than medicines
I love those Tater Tots from Sonic!

It is not that the Tots are so special
They are fair, with average flavor;
A pinch of salt, and LOTS of ketchup!
For me are all reasons to savor --

And perhaps I'm biased to these,
Seven years, not just as of late
And as odd as it seems for this food
'Twas what I had years ago on our date;

Our first date, seven years now are passed
At Sonic drive-in of all places
That was when I knew it was love
For my lifemate! (Not the tator tots' graces!)

And today, years later of seven,
My health issues keep getting worse
So much now in fact I have learned
All the names of every doctor and nurse;

It is strange to be forced my perspective
Narrowed minute by minute inside;
My imagination is all I can do now
Making new dreams over those once world-wide;

My beliefs remain Pagan as ever
My imagination still works just fine
And despite serious pain and depression
At least MY fantasies are ALL MINE --

I can fly when I dream, IF I sleep
I can phone the health care team staff
Forming treatments that need to occur:
The best, to find reason to LAUGH!

And to love, and to maintain hope
In a system wrought with horrible stress
I'm so charming they hardly believe me,
'Til they see my medical records mess...

I slay dragons, wield weapons for good!
I can cast any spell from my bed,
It is hard to get up and move,
But honey, I got it all in my head...

Thoughts of life cut just a bit shorter
From illnesses that are no one's fault,
My beloved steps out for a moment
To bring Tator Tots, pinch of salt --

But never forget LOTS of ketchup!!!
Fewer moments remain now for me,
So I cherish each laugh and each love,
And those RARE moments I am pain-free --

Something tells me the Tator Tots are not
Not the real food of which to boast,
All this talk, when it's really the KETCHUP!
Yes the ketchup that I like the most...

A pinch of salt (did I mention the ketchup?)
For me are all reasons to savor --
It is not that the Tots are so special
They are fair, with average flavor;

It takes effort continued and real
To maintain such good attitude,
I exaggerate only a little
And admit that the pain makes me rude...

But there's one thing better than medicines
That detract from my illnesses chronic,
One request, one behest, to by beau,
Bring me Tater Tots and KETCHUP from Sonic!

Author's Notes: This is my odd perspective on one of many ways to cope with day-to-day issues of my chronic illnesses that after over 30 years have begun to limit the simplest of daily activities and are known to decrease the length of my life.

Because people of "our" diverse belief systems are open to using the imagination, perhaps this poem can inspire those who are in similar situations, or those who know of others in similar situations, to find their own personal and individual ways to continue through life by focusing on the little things most important to them that only they can decide what those things are.

Often people default to the common "appreciation of nature" when they have chosen to focus on such little things in life, and this poem hopefully demonstrates that what one likes to do, even if it is eating tator tots with ketchup, can also be added to the list; it doesn't have to be "stereotypically metaphysical", it is simply whatever one chooses, which can be metaphysical by some definitions.

While in my own personal case tator tots with ketchup do not have scientifically and medically proven properties related to pharmaceutical medications, isn't it interesting that for a moment they seem to work better than such medications? Those moments are now the focus on my life, since there is little else to do. My doctors do NOT recommend exercise as it will further damage my neck and spine which I will have surgery for in the foreseeable future. So I guess the real issue is to ensure my blood sugar stays in check when I eat fried foods sometimes, right? :-)

My wish for people is that they become sensitized to all things that can be perceived as "good" and "meaningful" in any way that only they know how it could apply to them. It may not cure illness, but it makes the life experience of illness bearable in ways that science cannot measure.
