One World Religion (Ode to the Oxymoron)
by Phronesus Disegno
Age Group: Adult
"God helps those who help themselves, "
At least that's what I've heard;
How strange and so ambiguous
Without changing one word...
They help themselves to glitz and fame
While poor and sick get worse,
They help themselves to others' wealth
To fill their bulging purse.
They help themselves to power plays
The helpless are ignored,
Evangelistic words of faith
With tongues sharp as a sword.
They help themselves to schemes of fear
The ill shall not be well,
Unless forgiven by the tithe
That saves them all from Hell.
They help themselves over others' backs
To climb the ladder tall
To be one of the "chosen few"
Who watch six billion fall.
And so the oxymoron is
That "all are chosen", true.
I hear them say amongst themselves,
"I have BETTER faith than you."
And so it is they helped themselves
To opinions deemed as "right"
One single religion's holy wars
One sees the sickness, poor and weak;
The whole world is in need --
"God helps those who help themselves, "
Who help themselves from greed.
Author's Notes: I'm feeling a bit bitter right now. After 17 (seventeen) years at a successful career that ended in late 2010, I have little life savings left to keep me financially afloat as I wait for the decision for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) . In the meantime and for the first time in my adult life, I am now asking hospitals and other community services for charity.
Hospitals are no problem, as they consist of helping people who are ill without regard to ability to pay for such services; however, the motivation for this poem came up after DHS gave me a list of numbers to call for charity assistance.
One of the numbers was for a Catholic charity of some sort. When I called, I felt that the tone of voice was rudely explaining to me that this particular charity was for families with children only, and since I have no children under 18 living in the home with me, I was not eligible for this charity.
I don't know who I was speaking to at this Catholic charity, but I felt like I was being treated like a moocher who was also a deadbeat. The person and I did not discuss my spiritual beliefs, and I did not get a chance to go into detail about having physical illnesses when I was told that "God helps those who help themselves."
So instead of telling that person what I was "really" thinking, I wrote this poem to vent my frustration. And to be fair, I did call another number on the list which was a different Catholic charity. This second charity was very willing to assist me as best they could with small amounts paid directly to my utility bills. And for this, I am truly grateful. Grateful and bitter at the same time. I'll get over it. :-)
