Guess This Creature (Poetic Riddle)

by Phronesus Disegno

Age Group: Adult

This poetic riddle has you guess the name
Of a creature who loves to sing;
But not with a beak, nor even a mouth
Can this creature's humming bring.

And before you ask, yes, this creature is real
Not a fantasy from the mind;
Nearly all of us have seen many over the years
You could pet it, but it wouldn't be kind.

Its weapon of choice has nary a barb
Though its soft fur makes it look frail;
And contra-intuitive are the gender of young
Only fertilized eggs are female.

It lives in most higher altitudes
But on land, which is very clear;
Though 'tis found in few southern-half Earthly spots
It's mainly north hemisphere.

It lives out its life quite eusocially
And with humans no desire to bilk;
Resembling neither moth nor butterfly
Still the young spin cocoons of silk.

If and when it decides to sleep away from its home
It finds holes and/or flowers at night;
Humming loudly its song, not from flapping its wings,
But instead by its muscles of flight.

Though once 'twas believed it shan't fly at all,
Yet in plain sight it flew to a flower.
In fact, clumsy flight through the air with speeds
To about nine miles per hour!

Avoiding all crypsis its colors can show
Warding predators is automatic;
Though sometimes all black, or with red, usually yellow
Its colors are aposematic.

And if all the clues given are still not enough
Here's one more for you to think of:
An orchestral interlude was made in its name
By Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.

So guess the name of this beautiful creature
Before this poem's ending you'll see --
Give up? Oh, all right. Here's the answer. Right here.
It's the happy-hums bumblebee. :-)

Author's Notes: The orchestral interlude "Flight of the Bumblebee" was composed by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov around the year 1900.
