Don't Seek New Love When You Must Cry

by Phronesus Disegno

Age Group: Adult

The beautiful petals of a flower
Are shed from the cold that autumn brings
But soon winter's chill begins to feel the sun
Once again flowers bloom to greet the spring

It feels like a thousand years are lost
In time you will heal, have no fear
Believe, and when you're least expecting it
A new faithful love will appear

With time and patience you will see
A brand new love will come to be
A fool remains in winter's cold
'Cause fools won't let their heart unfold

But don't seek love when you must cry
Allow the tears to flow as they may
The seasons pass to help us by
Tomorrow gives us one more day

And in time the tears will start to dry
Knowing even springtime flowers die
Reborn, they start anew and then
They feel the sunlight once again.

With time and patience you will see
A brand new love will come to be
Reborn you'll start anew and then
You'll feel the sunlight once again.

Author's Notes: Inspired by the Hungarian lyrics of a song I listened to as a child, "Ne menj a boldogok kz", performed by Zsuzsa Matray in the 1960's. Translating the song into English didn't allow the lyrics to make quite as much sense and certainly didn't rhyme nor did it coincide with the music any longer.

So, I took the original intent of the Hungarian lyrics and reformulated them into this poem using some poetic license, as often literal translations from one language into another do not make as much sense as they did in the original language.

The above poem removes repeated lyrics and is restructured to be read from beginning to end like a story, so the poem version does not coincide with the corresponding lyrics that are in the song, but in a poetry forum, I suppose it's not that much of an issue.

If you care to listen to the original 1960's Hungarian version of the song, do an online search for the song's title "Ne menj a boldogok kz" or you can try these links, the first is a YouTube link in which the user posted the original Hungarian lyrics:

The song switches back and forth between D major (verses) and D minor (chorus) where a background singer vocalizes a haunting and completely different melody under the lead vocals; but after raising the key in mid-song, the song ultimately ends in a happier major key that encourages the age-old "happy ending" to the story. That is, after all, how love stories SHOULD end, isn't it? :-)
