Retrograde Weather Pattern

by Phronesus Disegno

Age Group: Adult

This week the weather was strangely odd
I'm astounded what Nature has made,
The low pressure system going backwards, you see,
That the weatherman called "retrograde".

Normally clouds move from west to east
And usually northward from south,
But it took a different route for a change
Northweth-terly over my houth.

The neighborhood cats backed into safe places
And birds stayed out to keep singing
The insects went back to wherever they go
Backwards patterns this weather keeps bringing;

Around here in the summer, it's usually hot,
The ground becomes cracked, it's so dry;
But this week, for a change, it has rained and rained,
Such odd things for the month of July!

And all of the plants and trees that lean
Were blown backwards to stand upright;
Even fallen leaves jumped back into trees.
No, I'm kidding, don't get uptight.

'Cause in a few days things will then return
To the way they have always been;
The cats will come out, the insects will too,
And the leaves will fall down once again.

Author's Notes: This week over Oklahoma and surrounding states, the low pressure system actually moved backwards, starting in the east and moving toward the west, a retrograde weather pattern that doesn't happen often. The local weatherman said it reminded him of "Springtime in Oregon" this week. I have heard Oregon is a beautiful state, but I have never been there.

Yesterday I stepped outside to look at the movement of the clouds. The weather quickly went from nothing to downpour in a matter of minutes at which time the weather radio went directly from silent to "severe thinderstorm warning", when usually it starts out ahead of time issuing a watch first. Fortunately, tornados were not indicated with this storm. Given the drought conditions, we needed the rain!
