Faith Based For-Profit

by Phronesus Disegno

Age Group: Adult

I have always known religion
In a church should be;
But one most daunting question
Still perplexes me...

In for-profit businesses
That claim their certain faiths,
What happens if some employees
Instead believe in wraiths?

The answer, I think, is found
In one office alone it's stored:
The company's religion is that
Of the owners and the Board!

Author's Notes: I have a problem with for-profit businesses claiming to be faith-based, because it is the faith of the owners and/or the board of directors, not the entire company. It opens the doors for religious discrimination against employees that do not follow the same faith as the owner and/or the board of directors; and for those who do share the same faith, it opens the doors for showing off how much more devout and righteous one employee is over others (in hopes of being revered more by higher-ups, or even to keep one's job) . While Federal law prohibits discrimination based on religion, there are many other ways a company can make it hard on you to be there if you don't share the same faith.

I once worked for such a company in the 1990's. I often stated that if the company really does represent the faith it believes in, then I certainly don't want to be a member of that faith. I still think of all the one-upping, back-stabbing and hypocrisy that occurred far more in that company than in other companies that were not faith-based. Those other companies were clearly secular and didn't care which faith anyone followed, or whether the employyes even had any particular faith to follow, so long as we did our jobs as best we could.
