The Unpredictable Nature of Love Spells

by Phronesus Disegno

Age Group: Adult

Have you ever cast a spell
In hopes of finding love?
Someone specific in your mind
Who's sent from up above?

I've learned that doing such a thing
Results in the uncanny --
That "special someone" noticed me!
...But so did others, MANY.

I wanted to appear, for sure,
More lovable to "one",
Still "others" gave their gaze me,
(Oh my! and it was fun!)

And in the end, that "one" I hoped
My lifelong love would be,
To my surprise, 'twas someone ELSE
Who fell in love me!

It was not who I thought of first
But real love's what I wanted;
What horrors might have happened if
The wrong one loved me haunted!

I guess the love spell really worked,
Not as I planned that day,
But someone BETTER noticed me
Our love's still strong today.

Author's Notes: We recently celebrated seven years of being together, and still going strong! Well, stable anyway. :-) Seven years ago I knew what I wanted, and I thought I knew "who" I wanted, but the intent was love, not presumptuous control over someone else's free choice (which can't be taken away from anyone anyway) , and definitely not the "first thing that came along". And someone else decided with free choice to be with me, not the original person I was thinking about. I couldn't have predicted the outcome, but I believe it was the outcome I needed the most.

I wonder if wanting to appear more lovable and/or more attractive to one particular person is supposed to result in a lot of other people noticing as well. The stigma of casting a love spell in an attempt to control someone else's feelings is among the weirdest and most ridiculous myths I have ever heard. The only way someone can be controlled is if they give their control to you, and given the present context, that is not what I would call "love". My opinion is that such a spell should be called what it really is, a control spell.

Just because one person may be the ideal you have in mind, doesn't mean that it will be that person who is best for you, or you for them. I believe that a person knows in his/her heart what is really needed, and through both positive and negative lessons in life, that is what the person will ultimately have.

And the love with whom I have spent seven years of my life is the most wonderful shipwreck I have ever known. ;-)
