Did God Make Her Faint?

by Phronesus Disegno

Age Group: Adult

A friend of mine I've known for years
To church invited me,
And so that she'd refrain from tears,
I went along to see.

She told me she in tongues could speak,
And hear the Holy Spirit!
She said she'd show me, sounding meek,
And swore that she could hear it...

And when she did, there at her station,
Saying, "You will see! --
-In front of all the congregation,
-God will speak to ME!
-I truly hear the voice of God,
-It overwhelms me so!"
But this, I thought, was very odd
Yet still I watched her go --

"Come forth, " the preacher said to all,
"And join with us in prayer."
My friend went forth with guile and gall.
(I sat and pulled my hair.)

And many others took a place
Before the watching people
To kneel and pray with utter grace
Beneath the church's steeple;

"Now for prayer, let us begin, "
(Just fold your hands like "this".)
I watched my friend, began to grin,
For this I would not miss!

And suddenly my righteous friend,
As she had said before,
STOOD UP! and SCREAMED! as if no end,
Then FAINTED to the floor.

The others gathered 'round to see
If she would be all right...
Yes maybe, but if you ask me,
I'll test her little plight:
"Excuse me people, I'm her friend,
-She warned me of this chance
-That God would grace her in the end
-To cause this happenstance..."

"Tell me friend, are you okay?"
(Unconscious, not a word.)
"Did God tell you to faint today,
-Was that what you have heard?"

Still fainted on the floor was she
But I shall call her bluff...
I lifted up her skirt, hee-hee,
And THAT, friends, was enough.
