Counting Sheep for the Sleep-Challenged
by Phronesus Disegno
Age Group: Adult
This was my story for nighttime,
When I could not find my sleep
I hope it can work for some others,
The story of counting the sheep.
For me it would seem very hopeless
I must be precise and exact;
For counting the sheep is accounting,
Accountants know all about that.
Now I never was an accountant
Yet still I must count sheep precise --
Sheep each have a mind of their own
But I neither stopped nor thought twice.
I started of course with the first,
The second sheep, then the third
How many sheep are to be counted?
I asked but they said not a word.
Fine then, I'll count them all twice
To be sure that correct is my answer;
But always one mischievous sheep
Won't stay put, it is such a fine dancer.
And though we all know sheep are soft
To the “counted sheep” place I have lead
Trotting one side to the other
I'd wake as they stepped on my head.
I'd count them across one by one
And notice the sky from afar
The stream of a light whizzing by:
Distraction by falling star.
Lost count of all the sheep counted!
And I must start over again:
A-one, and a-two and a-three…
How many to count ‘til the end?
I counted but thirty or forty,
And feared that my goal was retreating;
For all of a sudden the sheeplings
Decided at once to start bleating!
I opened one eye from the noise
And thought this was all a mistake;
How IS counting sheep ever helpful,
If they all try to keep me awake?
I wrangled and herded these sheep
And still they just wouldn’t jibe...
Perhaps a nice handful of grass
For each would be just the right bribe.
Instead they all gathered around
To eat all the grass that I gave
But when all the grass was eaten
The sheep knew they could misbehave.
Start over again, as I thought
In my cleverness act of bewitching:
I’ll “carry” them all, one by one
Then I realized the wool caused me itching.
Start over again, all these sheep!
As it felt I was counting for hours,
But some lost their way being counted
By stopping to smell all the flowers.
Again here I was starting over,
A-one and a-two and a-three,
What is it with all of these sheep?
They just won’t cooperate with me.
Start over again, once again,
I would force them to bend to my will;
They all crossed their arms and refused
To be counted while standing quite still.
And so I then tried to bargain
In fact I began to plead.
The sheep now all huddled together,
Turned back to face me, and agreed --
But only on one condition
Would they choose to be counted, appeased:
I must let them cross one at a time
In whatever manner they pleased.
By now I was desperate to sleep
So I let them walk over my head,
Or dance across even while bleating
As I lay there exhausted in bed.
A-one, and a-two, and a-three,
Many more did I count of those sheep
Losing count as the sheep flew away…
Final thoughts as I fell fast asleep.
My nighttime dreams did unfold
And the sheep were all there to say:
“We did what we did just for you,
‘cause for you, ‘twas the only way.”
“But what do you mean, ‘only way’,
You mischievous little sheep?”
They said in truth, “No other way
Would ever make YOU fall asleep!”
