By The Way Dawn Comes

by Thomas Harris
 Age Group: Adult

By the way dawn comes, And the light mist disperses, This is what is shown to us... Sing the new day, Sing the breath given, Sing the vision born, Step upon the walkway Or greet grace beneath your eager feet.
Deep cries, deep to deep, Wailing and moaning...loud cries: This is what is shown to us... Guts upended and torn. Wom shattered, love shorn. Broken spirit, revived fear. Turn, turn and back away Ne'er greet grass beneath your eager feet.
No reconciliation....the same Rachel weeping for her children Tears flow down and tears at your soul.
No returning to the day...it's night The cup of blood is poured out And tears well up where hope has died.
Dawn comes the same as ever, Just as we have forgotten to see.
Author's Notes: This poem, believe it or not, is about miscarriages and women who lose their children to the child welfare system. While often nature is cause for miscarriages and the child welfare workers are doing a much needed job that does it's best to protect our future, the pain and agony of losing children is one of the worst things a parent never wanted to experience. Yet it happens all the time, and the agony of it is irrepairable. While I am gay, I have a sister that lost a child--for a while--to the child welfare system. Her mind was absolutely lost in turmoil when it happened, and she did things that in her right mind she never would have done, so while I haven't seen the effects of this firsthand, i have seen it second hand. My heart goes out to those who go through this horror.
