Spitter Must Be Heard

Hey, this be spittin'
It ain't no re-fined oral tradition.
It is what it is, hustlin',
In the heart of the street
Where they who must be heard
Must stand up, and throw down.
Babe, you know this;
Spittin' you can't resist
When words like bullets fly
We stand up, we can't be shy.
Now, word, it is a power
Can destroy, or be a flower
So tell it right now
What's down in that heart of yours
Make me wonder deep down
Heart, compose the sweetest sound
For the bigger they are
Harder they gonna fall
A two edged sword, this voice,
Gonna go on and on
Throw down some righteousness:
Words rising up from dark abyss
Make me re-ject the ignorance
Re-calibrate for soul's defence.
We are they who must be heard.
We must stand up, and throw down.
Author's Notes: Rap has developed two forms of oral poetry as byproducts of the lyric poetry it has come to stand for: spittin', which is the street poetry you hear young hip hop artists producing, often ad lib, in the company of others who appreciate it; and oral tradition, which is basically memorized spitting. Spittin' is very much akin to the Celtic Bardic Tradition, for spittin' is known to comment at the spur of a moment, with inspiration that Druids would recognize as imbued with magick, imbas, power....on issues that touch not the cultured side of our existance, but every moment.
