Winter Solstice 2013

by Phronesus Disegno

Age Group: Adult

The rain fell then the ice storm came
And then the fog came low
To crystallize in perfect form
In place of winter snow

The next night clear beneath a moon
The sight before my eyes
My home, the trees, the land and grass,
To sparkle like night skies

Though well below the freezing point
The air was calm and still
A mild cool sensation on my face
Without a chill

No sounds, just perfect silence
Mesmerized by what I saw
I took it in, this once-a-yearly
Sight that soon would thaw

A layered crystal sheen to see
Of a billion diamonelles
Imagining crackling crystal sounds
Through nighttime's silence tells

As far away as eyes could see
Beneath my feet as near
My thoughts stood by in quiet peace
Somehow, my mind was clear

My home, the trees, the land and grass,
These ordinary things
When crystallized I've never known
This beauty winter brings.

Author's Notes: Around here in winter, we get a few days of ice and a few days of snow. But this time, we had a minor ice storm that was followed by a very thick winter fog during unusually low temperatures that were well below freezing.

The fog actually took the whole night to crystallize in mid air, and the tiny glittering crystals fell to settle on the layer of ice that was already on the ground.

The following night was clear with moonlight and the other surrounding lights in the neighborhood. This produced a visual effect that made everything appear to be covered with highly reflective white and silver glitter, a sight that is rare in these parts.

The air had no wind speed, and everything seemed very silent and still, but the illusion of the overwhelming amount of white and silver sparkles on literally everything as far as the eye could see seemed to produce an "imagined" sound of ice crystals.
