In the Garden, Man to Man...

by Thomas Harris
 Age Group: Adult

I recall that we've known each other Nigh onto three decades now And somehow once we drifted apart Our lives continued to walk side by side In spiritual kinship..... And now outside the back door There grows a garden in clay pots Of tender plantings and fragile stems Not something easily tended But something lovingly watched o'er In the hours when I am sure that all I have ever known is left somewhere Other than here. You've planted these. And when you move away These plantings fall to me to tend Until I see your face again, my friend, So these tender stems are become A loving extension of you. How is it that the same one That when you were five Took up a hoe and helped your mom 'Weed' the garden as best you could And she swore she'd never plant again When she saw how you hacked the tomatoes In the rocky ground and said "See? I helped you cut the weeds, Mommy" Well, that garden is still around, This time planted in different soil By your hands, and now I weed for you. Or at least I hope that was a weed in the mint. And somehow the soil in the garden of pots, Man to man, beneath our fingernails, Is the same soil that is spread Eight hundred miles beneath our feet. O, tell me something about this garden: Was it planted in love of magick? For we Fey are wont of magick and lore.... And the soil that is the birthgiver Is the holder of the Mother's bones And it is she that affirms us from birth. When none else would hear us, She did, And she comforted us. When we first explored the tender touch, She held us in Her arms. And now, when things are tense and worrisome, She pulls us together, unfinished, we know. That is the word you used Man to man in the garden of pots...
unfinished
And said that it didn't seem right That we should meet again after so long a time And then you shoulud move fast away I agree, it didn't seem right, And you said that it seemed incomplete...
unfinished.
Man to man, in this garden of pots, The Great Mother was witness Between two gay friends Who She brought back together. In one place, and yet calling another place Home.
