Two Ancestral Homes
by Phronesus Disegno
Age Group: Adult
I once wondered as a child,
Why my parents didn't get along.
From two different places
But living together
Across the world from each other.
In America, land of my Native People
Where the horizon surrounds me
And farther away, in the mountains
With red clay as far as the eye can see
I heard the voice of my Mother's ancestors...
Yet, in Hungary I have peacefully found
It is not so different there,
Surrounded by the beautiful mountains
With green grass and trees reaching to the sky
I heard the voice of my Father's ancestors...
In the middle of two cultures,
Where the languages are so different,
Roots apart, but branches reach to connect
And where my parents have finally learned
To be each other's friend:
To have always seen two sides of the issue,
To have witnessed the conflict and resolution,
The comforting voice of my ancestors assure me
I shall always have two homes, near and far,
Right here in my own soul.
Author's Notes: I always thought my spiritual experiences in North America and Europe would be so uniquely different that they would always remain separate from each other. But my last trip to visit relatives in Hungary (1997) after not seeing them for over 15 years during which time my paternal grandparents passed on in their home town of Szakonyfalu, my cousins took me on a sightseeing tour and at one point I found myself staring at the mountains. The mountais looked a little different than the ones here, but their voices were almost exactly the same, as if it did not matter their country of origin.
This poem is therefore about sensing my ancestry in two different parts of the world, from my Dad's Hungarian side of the family, and my Mother's American side of the family. Somehow, having been in the middle all my life, I finally found the union between the two different worlds. I found it in the most obvious of all places, right here inside of me the whole time.
