Not Suicide

There have been times I hurt inside
And wondered what I did,
To eat some crow and swallow pride
Ain't fun for a little kid.
And now that I am near mid-life
It's not as hard to try,
But never thoughts of suicide!
I'm still too young to die.
And so with humor I shall say
Since all else has been said,
Quit thinking about suicide!
(Think "homicide" instead.)
Author's Notes: Just a little humor to demonstrate that negative thoughts do not always deserve to be turned inward, particularly when it comes to disappointment involving other people. Taking all the blame is not good management of personal feelings. After all, whatever another person does is a statement on their own behalf, not anyone else's.
All aspects of personal development are tough because of uncountable and unexpected changes occurring. But, the longer you live, the better you can handle what life brings you. My only wish for anyone who reads this poem is, if you have been thinking about suicide, to realize it is okay to give yourself credit for all the good you have within your heart, and to give yourself a chance to be surrounded by people who can remind you of this. Seek out these people and give your life a chance to stabilize, because it most certainly will as you learn what it truly means to be alive, and how important it is that you are a part of other people's lives.
Take it from someone who has been through it and who has learned how to be in control of his life. Years ago, a doctor once told me something that has stuck in my mind: "Living is 100% better than the alternative." And now that I have gotten through the hardest part of my life, I can finally see that my doctor was exactly right.
And by the way, I was just kidding about committing homicide. That kind of antisocial behavior is highly inappropriate to say the very least. ;-)
