Commentary on Gay Magick

by Phronesus Disegno
 Age Group: Adult

Masculine and Feminine energies A time-honored traditional duality of the two-based Magickal model Which Gay People will always respect
Alas, some believe that Gay People Cannot create this energy current Within this traditional system Of masculine-feminine energy
True, we are outside of this system Having both masculine and feminine energies That already exist naturally within us As catalysts for human evolution
We create our realities at will With self-contained dual energies combined Into a third energy that is neither gender Yet independently suitable for both
This third energy is who we are, Inherent to a Gay Person's being With no effort, it has always been there As we become increasingly aware of it
The masculine-feminine current is therefore Not always the Magickal issue or objective, Allowing us new ways to explore human existence Where time-honored tradition abrogates itself
And so for those people out there Who think Gay People cannot "create" The masculine-feminine energy current, I only say this:
Correct -- but only within the confines Of a magickal scope that was never applicable! Its "creation" occurs continuously through our lives And was never the issue...
Because Magick reaches to infinity Symbolic biological gender does not Existing perception must evolve or die, With each new piece of information
We ARE this energy current We are in fact so much more That we have yet to fully discover ourselves So watch us evolve in ways you never imagined,
As we go out into the unknown before you Creating new paths for future generations That all humanity may continue to evolve -- Treading far beyond traditional obsolescence.
Author's Notes: Written for Gay People, in response to having read a couple books written by notable and respected authors who have irritated me by over-categorizing heterosexist masculine and feminine energies to the exclusion of all other possibilities, particularly with their suggestion of how Gay People would seem ineffectual in terms of coven work because they do not fit in with the traditional masculine-feminine polarity. They don't even believe that a Gay coven could work. These authors include Janet and Stewart Farrar ("A Witches Bible Compleat") and Sybil Leek ("The Complete Art of Witchcraft") . These books do contain interesting information, but I think they also contain some potentially damaging misinformation that could perpetuate wrong ideals.
These (and other) authors have presumed authority to narrow the scope of magickal legitimacy into categories and definitions that aren't even applicable to Gay aspects of magick, and most certainly inapplicable to the limitlessness of creative imagination and continued exploration of territory never before explored. So of course, according to their own terms, Gay people wouldn't work well in a coven. It would seem to beg the question why they weren't looking for ways to be more inclusive with Gay coven members, or more supportive of all-Gay covens... Perhaps the answer is ignorance and sexism? They need not be haphazardly commenting on things they don't know enough about. After all, it's not someone else's subjectively "correct" magickal system that works, it's the individual's personal decision which may sometimes involve things outside of a masculine-feminine duality framework.
Addendum Jan 23, 2005: After thinking about this issue, I think I've figured out what I really wanted to say. I believe in the concept of "polarity" and resulting balance, but I believe that the masculine-feminine framework is a SUBSET of polarity, not a superset. There are uncountable things that have polarity without gender, and to superimpose gender as somehow dominant, in my opinion, is rather inappropriate. I believe polarity existed before gender, and that limiting polarity to gender is, well, limiting. I guess I exist outside of such limits and therefore have new options and perspectives, as I'm sure many people do.
Addendum October 26, 2006: After even more research and consideration, well, I'll level with you. It would seem that if you really, really think about it -- the "current" of which the Farrars have spoken about in their book most likely has an underlying premise of the sexual attraction that occurs between a heterosexual male and female, and that is also referred to by many other sources that discuss sex magic (k) . Well, it does beg the question as to whether these covens in which Gay people are alledgedly ineffectual are ones that utilize sexual attraction as their only method of "generating a current". Granted, sex and sexual attraction can have that effect. But there are tremendous inherent flaws in such a premise if one states that Gay people are not effective. For example, what about the same-sex members of a heterosexual coven? Or, what about the attraction between members of an all-Gay coven? Surely, it is not the sexual attraction alone that causes the current. There has to be something more deliberate and conscious to make it a magic (k) al effort. And certainly, such deliberation and consciousness that causes a magic (k) al effort is possible without sexual attraction. If I am correct, Gay people do indeed have a functional place in any and all types of covens. The real question is whether covens that promote belief in "Gays are ineffectual" are worth anyone's time. Yeah, they are. They are worth my time to demonstrate that the entire GLBTQ-and-Friends community is already changing the world before their eyes. One example, we all know of the Human Rights Campaign and its active role in the United States, maybe they're not Pagan or Wiccan, but do they need to be in order to successfully perform what Pagans and Wiccans call "Magic (k) "? The Truth is, and I'm sure it is true for many Gay people, we invoke changes in ourselves and in our surroundings quite naturally, because we were designed that way.
