Just When I Thought

Age Group: Adult
Just when I thought my friendships
Were what I made them out to be,
I learn that they also
Define who I am.
Just when I thought happiness
Would end when loved ones are gone,
I notice the sun still rises,
And the birds still sing.
Just when I thought life
Required all defenses armed,
I am touched by peaceful souls
Who ask for nothing in return.
Just when I thought that love
Was endless compromise and sacrifice,
I feel unconditional love return to me
When I just allow it to flow.
Just when I thought that nothing
Would be mysterious anymore,
I feel a spark of hope
And I believe as a child again.
Just when I thought living means
Only getting more of the same,
I finally reap the rewards
I've been sowing all my life.
Just when I thought no one
Would love me for who I am,
I look within and realize,
It really is okay to be me.
Just when I thought that "thinking"
Was the answer to everything,
I allow my mind a moment of peace,
Because clearly, I think too much.
