Age Group: Adult
It seems almost an eternity ago
I told you to get lost.
Causing harm to me,
As if you didn't know!
Angry now that you're paying the cost.
You cannot say I'm the one at fault,
Having earned yourself a demerit,
For the bourgeoisie
Has sided with me
Because I've not smudged my own merit.
You think that I've been paying mind
To things you say and do?
I've long since left
You far behind
With nary a thought of you.
You have belittled your very self,
By proclaiming I've "won" some game,
Seeking others' sympathy
As you whittle yourself,
From your self-inflicted shame,
But I never played part in your dramatic play,
Though in "your" mind I was,
Now you wallow around
In your self-dismay
Learning what your own Black Magick does.
You see, my dear, all of this time
I've done nothing, not one thing!
For what you sent out,
Your own little crime,
Is now what your Karma brings...
Try harder to harm me if you must,
Muster up all that you can wield,
It does nothing to me,
But turns you to rust,
Bouncing back from my innocent shield.
Maybe now, you will hear me when
I implore you to leave me alone:
For my self-defense
Comes again and again,
Its power source has always been your own!
Author's Notes: This poem is not intended to be about anyone in particular, but it does describe several situations in my past where, because of my decision to end an unhealthy interpersonal relationship, the other person attempted to achieve his own catharsis (in this case, the emotional purging of negative thoughts for the purpose of cleansing) by doing whatever was necessary to cause me harm in terms of my healthy relations with others, for example, by spreading false rumors; but in doing so, the disgruntled person achieved quite the opposite because I did not retaliate against him, knowing good and well that he was only setting himself up for self-ruin.
I am certainly not perfect, and I have done wrong things too, but at least I live my life not afraid to face and accept the blame for anything I have honestly done, because I find that people are generally more tolerant of mistakes when you are not afraid to admit them and learn from them, and when you demonstrate a sincere desire to achieve a working solution to the problem, rather than making it worse by perpetuating the situation.
