Great-Granny's Gregarious Ghost

by Phronesus Disegno
 Age Group: Adult

As this wonderful season gets close to Samhain, Strange things begin to emerge. Surrounded by ghosts and goblins, I'm knowin' That craziness is on the verge.
With all these people who like to dress up, I admit, I'm one of them too, The Halloween meaning is a little messed up, Oh, what it all puts me through...
You see, here I am at the end of a year, Reunited with loved ones deceased, But children as monsters now try to come near! Who allowed them to be released?
They come around and knock on my door While I chat with the ghost of great-granny, I give them some candy but they ask for more, Those children are certainly canny.
But the ghost of great-granny wants not to be seen, She always was full of pride, For she'd scare off the children and make them turn green, So in my closet she does hide.
I answer the door with the children there And wait to hear "trick or treat" But granny had plans which I was unaware And those plans were all but discrete...
I gave them the candy, but suddenly when They were just about to say thanks, My closet door opened, and then it began, Great-granny was playing her pranks.
My blue jeans walked out, complete with my shoes And also did one of my sweaters, They twiddled around as if drunken with booze, The shocked children stood there in fetters
My clothes then walked over and twirled with a spin, Reached into the candy bowl... Embarassed by this demonstration of kin, Not knowing what was her goal
She put extra candy in each of their bags, They smiled in high repute, She returned to the closet without any snags And closed the door with a salute
The children just stood there and looked at me And so I explained to them all, The ghost of great-granny, I'm sure you'll agree Is silly with mischief and gall.
And then they continued their journey with glee To get candy from someone else next, Then granny returned from the closet to be With me in the present context
I asked her what all that was about She looked at me and smiled. She said, "I'm exceptionally old and stout, But it doesn't mean I'm not wild!"
Together, that night we answered the door To fill childrens' bags with sweets, Reminiscing the past and of old times galore, Between all the "trick-or-treats".
