Imagine A World

Imagine a world
Where your next door neighbor
Blamed you for who you are
Even if it was never your choice.
Imagine a world
Where your next door neighbor
Could call the police
If they didn't like who you were dating.
Imagine a world
Where your next door neighbor
Dictated whether you could get married
And it would be so.
Imagine a world
Where your next door neighbor
Could prevent you from having any children
Just because they didn't like you.
Imagine a world
Where your next door neighbor
Disallowed you to see your lifetime partner
With a terminal illness in the hospital.
Imagine a world
Where your next door neighbor
Could turn your village against you
For having an idea they didn't agree with.
Imagine a world
Where your next door neighbor
Could have you fired from your job
Because they felt like picking on someone.
Imagine a world
Where your next door neighbor
Could break into your house and kill you
And get off easy because it was only you.
Imagine a world
Where your next door neighbor
Is supported by the rest of society
To keep you oppressed.
Imagine a world
Where your next door neighbor
Has the most basic fundamental human rights
But you don't.
Imagine a world
Where your next door neighbor
Doesn't know who you are
Because you can't even be yourself.
Imagine a world
Where your next door neighbor
Is only one of a million bullies
That last an entire lifetime.
Imagine this world
In which Gay people live.
Author's Notes: One of my darker poems intended to inspire thought in people who had no clue, and to serve as an affirmation and an acknowledgement for those who have been through it. I'm sure the content of this poem is nothing new for some Gay people who read this, and anyone who is oppressed in any manner could probably relate to certain parts of this poem. But hey, isn't it better to bring a dark topic into the light? I don't want to be forced to live without the same rights and opportunities as everyone else because I'm human too and I pay all the same taxes too, and the forthcoming November 2004 election here in the United States is one thing that has me very nervous, not that even the best possible outcome would cause any changes overnight.
