To My Younger Self

by Phronesus Disegno
 Age Group: Adult

One day... You will be equal to your parents You will see them as people Just like everyone else
No longer must their opinion be yours But yours may be similar No longer will they treat you as a child But to them you always will be
You will talk with them as adults, You will have earned their respect. You will discuss your ideas, And they will admire your maturity (but they'll still have their own opinion...)
They will look at you And be so very proud For becoming so much more Than they ever dreamed of being
They are regular people Who dealt with life as you are doing And they still may not have learned What you have, by their examples
When you become a parent You will not know everything You will make mistakes Just as your parents did
But when you are equal to your parents, You will see how much they tried, That they did as best they could And that they have always loved you.
One day... If you are lucky They will ask for your forgiveness And you will suddenly realize,
In your heart of hearts, You have always loved them too, And you'll wonder why in the world Would they ever need your forgiveness,
For having guided you into being The beautiful loving soul you are.
Author's Notes: You know, both of my parents made some terrible mistakes with me. And by saying that, I am not showing disrespect. I'm just saying it like it is. Having grown older and gaining an understanding of who my parents are as people, now it all seems so clear to me what I was once too young to understand. Societal influence, religious influence, cultural influence, all of this and more contributed to who my parents were.
I suppose I am extremely lucky, though, to have been raised by them. Even through the most miserable times, they never divorced, not even when I wanted them to (gasp!) . I watched as my mother evolved into taking up for herself and learning how to set her own boundaries, escaping from being so subserviant and codependent. I watched as my father evolved into someone who put his family before all others, learning the true meaning of love and how to show love. I may still have some childhood baggage, but I see now that they always loved me through even the most difficult times. And now, I honestly believe they are in a healthy relationship with each other after all of these years.
And you know something else? I've learned that becoming a man doesn't mean that I don't need them anymore. Whenever I need them, they are there. And even when they AREN'T needed... they are there. ;-)
