You Never Asked

You never asked what I wanted
You presumed your own desires upon me
You never asked how I felt
You superimposed your feelings onto mine
You never asked what I thought
You replaced my ideas with yours
You never asked for my perspective
You allowed only yours to prevail
You never asked if I was comfortable
You sought your own comfort at my expense
You never asked me anything
You would have "your" way, or "no" way...
And when I offered you boundaries to respect,
You never asked why I enforced them,
Because you didn't want me to have a mind of my own.
And when I did what was right for me,
You never asked if I was serious about leaving you,
Because your plans to control me didn't include that.
And when I offered you the gift of friendship,
You never asked why I distanced myself from you,
Because I had more power over myself, than you did.
And when I left you behind in your sorrow,
You never asked why you lost it all,
Because you would have had to accept some blame.
And in your anger to retaliate against me,
You never asked who the real source of your anger was
Because you would have had to face yourself.
I watch as you squander your energies
No longer able to steal my inner light
Trying to get me back, to punish me,
For liking myself enough to protect myself.
And in the end, now that I am gone from your life,
Now that I have bid you farewell,
Now that I will not let you come back,
Now that I have denied you all permissions,
You honestly believe I'll be sorry.
You honestly believe I will miss you.
You honestly believe it's all about you.
And you honestly believe I still care.
And it becomes clear to me:
Ignorance is quite to your content,
You don't want to see the Truth,
You'll keep believing the wrong things,
Because you never asked...
Author's Notes: A narrative poem written recently of resurfaced recollections of unhealthy relations of the distant past. Someone in that part of my past wasn't curious enough to seek the Truth of our situation. He thought he knew it all, and to him, that was the way it was going to be. He had in his mind who he wanted me to be, not who I really was. As clearly stated by the poem, he never asked me what was on my mind, and I have learned that controlling people do not want to acknowledge anything that does not harmonize with what they already had in their own mind. I have encountered a handful of similar people since then, but now I understand better how to recognize what is healthy, or unhealthy, for me in my life so that I can take the appropriate action. You can't change a controlling person, but you don't have to lose control of your own life either.
