In Praise of the Woodland King
by Thomas Harris

By day you hide, by night you ride,
Thou King all robed in frayed array
By sky you fly, by stream you glide,
Thou King who stays in the woodland glade
And in the night when the chant is heard
And deer come near to see our gathering
And we, like wolves, howl to the moon
In woodland tongue, we sing to the King
And when the wind comes whipping through
And when the night sky is crystal clear
And when our chanting here is done
Your subjects scatter with the silent deer
By day you hide, by night you ride,
Thou King all robed in frayed array
By sky you fly, by stream you glide,
Thou King who stays in the woodland glade
You Horned Greenman in the wood
Combine within you all you could
For you are all our dream and fantasy
And you are all dire reality
You Horned Greenman in the wood
List you to our chant, if you would
For when night is over and come the day
Lord of the Greenwood, safe hidden stay
