White Moth

by Phronesus Disegno
 Age Group: Adult

I have here a strange story Somewhat hard to believe As I eat chicken cacciatore I'll tell you what I perceive
It was about a year ago I had a friend named Jim About every three months or so We drove to Dallas on a whim It was July 2003 When for his arrival I awaited, A white moth flew in to me Through the window to be so fated
And right about just then My friend Jim knocked on my door So we went on to Dallas again For the time of our lives to explore But once we arrived in that city We both faced a horrible plight A situation to require my pity He fell ill on that very night
I was there long as I could be For two days in Dallas I stayed Then they arrived, his family And I went back home, I'm afraid And when I arrived back home I saw the white moth was still there But having been left all alone It lay dead on the floor near a chair
Jim remained there in the hospital At first he seemed to be alright; A month later his health became brittle And he finally died the last night And today over a year has passed; On Halloween when the veil was thin I remembered when I saw Jim last, But would I ever see him again?
It may be this time of year Or a mere coincidental case: A white moth in my house did appear Having sprung from a hiding place And so I was reminded of Jim As odd as it seems to be, I might have been visited by him, If only to say "hi" to me. :-)
Well I'm done with my cacciatore So I believe I'll bid you adieu I hope you enjoyed my story 'Cause believe it or not, it's true.
Author's Notes: This may not be the most spectacular incident that I have ever experienced, but to me it was an interesting one.
My friend Jim was 69 years old at the time of his death. He suffered a terrible stroke when we were in Dallas together. After undergoing two surgeries, he was unable to speak although he was aware of his surroundings. He remained in the hospital in Dallas for a month, and then passed away.
In many ways I wanted to be like him, and we complimented each other with the difference in our age. It was odd that on our trip to Dallas, he mentioned to me that "once your parents are gone, you realize that you're next."
He always wanted to discuss general aspects of religion with me, as I suppose he had some difficulties with it in his own childhood. He never quite learned my own spiritual beliefs, and so I spoke with him in terms of his own views regarding the Christian God. I imagine that his doctorate in zooligy influenced his beliefs in that he could not reconcile the scientific method with religious faith. We always had interesting discussions.
It was almost as though he wanted to hear me say and repeat, for the purpose of reassurance, something my own mother taught me, that "everything God ever does just brings us all closer to Him, " and he also wanted to hear my views that it was humanity that made God out to be a vengeful deity, but that we are not expected to be perfect as humans, as God's love is truly unconditional and very forgiving. He liked to hear me say that God's "unconditional love" means just that -- love given freely with no conditions at all.
