Letting Go

We started on a bad note
And my, we played it strong,
Yet each of us was playing
A completely different song.
We had different sheet music
And different instruments
A grand mistake that we did make
For a grandiose performance
We ignored the Great Conductor,
In ourselves instead engaged,
We forgot all about the music
Too worried of being upstaged.
You had your own ideas
And mine were not the same
So when we sounded awful
We both tried laying blame.
While some listened intently
Others yawned and took a nap,
But I'm very sure I heard
Not one single person clap.
Instead they sat in silence
And wondered what went wrong,
How could two loving souls
Play such a hateful song?
The curtain, closed once again,
Nothing left but to go our own way.
It's okay if we can't be friends,
Said you didn't want to anyway.
But I never gave you credit
For having a song of your own
Perhaps I should have listened
And maybe I'd have known.
The theater is now empty
In the dark we stand and wait
For the other's apology
In stone-cold stalemate.
I have healing to do myself,
But we're still getting nowhere,
So I offer my apology first
Then I'll know what to do from there.
