Slowly Growing Love

To trust others with big things,
first requres my trust
with those lesser things
that don't seem to matter much;
as hoping for the best
and blind leaps of faith
are not my way.
When I open my heart
not a lot, just a little
and see how much you care
just the way it is, who I am,
without force-prying it open;
to be responsible for a mere hint
no greed, no impatience,
no pushing, no demanding,
leaving expectations behind
and learning what to expect
is to earn my trust.
And if you don't presumptuously
tear deep into my heart
to rip out of me as others have
what I haven't given yet,
but rather, appreciate me
despite my cautiousness
I will believe you care.
Love isn't easy for me.
To assert your own identity
because you know yourself
quite well enough
Is the only way I can respect you
For I cannot read your mind
But you can guide me
As I guide you
Because we know ourselves
and share responsibility
With my trust and your caring
my heart will just "know"
and with one day at a time
no rush
you will see the bud
as it slowly blooms for you
as I learn how to love you back
the way you need the most
as my heart ultimately unfolds
You are aware of me
my concerns, my fears
for you have the same ones
You know if you plant a seed
leaving it neglected to die
then it will
We both know this
And that seems to be why
the sprout is flourishing beautifully
This is what you have done for me
The process has begun
and has much farther to go
but as I see it
you are tending to what you planted
unlike others in the past
who cared only what they would get
so sincerely, you do care
and by the time it has bloomed
into a deep red rose
you can be sure
that my heart will be yours alone.
