Chameleonic Being

What a lovely image you are...
I know you are hiding something,
Dressed in the finest of friendship,
Concealed by a cloak of mystery,
Shielding yourself with proclamations
That sound almost too good to be true.
A true work of artistry you presented,
The painting, painted many times over,
Layers upon layers over the original.
I saw what you proudly displayed,
But terrified your very soul
When the orginal was all I saw.
But soft, you spoke to interrupt
My carefully chosen words;
My words that flew gently past your claims,
My thoughts that resolved your enigma,
My vision that saw through to within you,
The part you desperately kept hidden.
Had you only seen past your fear,
That not everyone is like you,
Needing layer upon layer of self-deception,
That the wonderful person you saw in me,
Really was the bona fide "original" me
That sounded almost too good to be true,
Then I suppose you would have believed me
When I held my mirror before you
Forcing you to observe within your reflection
Far beyond the lifetime of fear and shame
I said, what a lovely image you are.
But you weren't ready to look within.
So keep changing your colors,
Change them for everyone except yourself,
Dear chameleonic being,
For you have done it so long,
You can no longer fathom
That it could be any other way.
