Harming Oneself: Is It Really Wise?

by Phronesus Disegno
 Age Group: Adult

Someone didn't love you The way you needed to be loved. Someone didn't know how To appreciate your beauty, Both within and without.
So go ahead and blame yourself, When it's not your fault. Go ahead and hurt yourself, For someone else, Who didn't care enough.
Go ahead and deny the true ones, Who do love you for you, Exactly the way you are, Who never told you your smile Erases their pain.
Those who haven't told you quite yet, How you've helped them, How you've kept them going, If for nothing else, Than to just make it through the day.
You didn't know they were hurting, They didn't tell you. You were just there, And you helped as best you could Even if you didn't know how, Because you too have experienced pain.
Others don't know you are hurting, You haven't told them, But they are there, And will help as best they can Even if they don't know how, Because they too have experienced pain.
Go ahead and hurt your true friends, Your family, your pets, yourself. Leave them all behind to wonder How they could have helped If only they knew you were hurting.
Leave this world behind, Knowing it will just keep turning, The Sun and Moon will still shine, The birds will still sing, And life will simply go on As it has always done -- Less the very blessing Of your existence in it.
Yes, go ahead and perpetuate the pain, Take your own life For nothing more than a lousy reason. Your absence only ensures That the problem and the pain Will NEVER be solved!
Multiply your burden Times all the people who care, And then leave it all to them, Your last legacy, Inherited by the ones who never deserved it. That IS how you want them to remember you, Isn't it?
And when you reach the other side, You will hear their thoughts Each time they think of you And learn the hard way that passing over Was not the answer. Too late, eh?
Do this world a terrible injustice, Defy your beliefs, Harm No One? Yeah, Make one little exception And harm yourself, Because you are too weak To think clearly.
All because of two people:
The one who didn't care enough; Why not just grieve and let go, Don't go down thinking It hasn't happened before To everyone else who has ever lived Because it has...
And then there's the second person, Whether you want to or not, Whether in life or in death, You must face this person --
The one who also didn't Love you enough, Because this person too, Did not know how.
The most important one of all... The one who stares back at you Each time you look in a mirror.
If the person in the mirror Is thinking of harming you, Well, isn't the only logical answer, To defend yourself?
