The Disease of Love

by Phronesus Disegno
 Age Group: Adult

If love causes bad things For which there is no cure Then love is a disease And that you can be sure. But what is a disease, A sickness to possess? It's not a true possession, It's actually a "process".
Sometimes the process goes More than a single day, Slowed down from catching cold, But soon you're on your way. Sometimes the process goes A month or two or three, Adjusting first is hard, But finally you are free.
Sometimes the process goes Beyond a person's prime; Sometimes it goes beyond A person's whole lifetime. The love, or the disease, The "process" that's a mess, At times can be at ease In moments of digress.
At times it is a blessing, This disease of love you caught; At times it has its good points! Without which would be naught. The disease of love is hard, With the processes it brings We all have this disease That makes us feel weird things
But really, what's a process? A series of actions and changes; And love, both good and bad, Gives meaning to our exchanges. Love is what you make it, So make it love, for sure! And live as best you can, For love, there is no cure.
Author's Notes: Inspired by echos of my own thoughts to myself, of times in my life that have been difficult for me, after reading other poems about the difficulties people face in their love life, particularly when the relationship is not going well or ending.
To say that a disease is a "process" rather than a posession is something I learned from a dear friend of mine, now deceased from having battled many years of AIDS. To look at it from that perspective was helpful in seeing all disease, sickness, even emotions like love, are to be dealt with by learning what one can about them, accepting and embracing reality, and going with the flow rather than against it with hindering thoughts of self-loathing and self-victimization. And in his own words, he said, "You may be thrown into the river against your will, and what's done is done. So you can waste your energy fighting the current, or you can make the best of it as the river takes you to your destiny."
As for me? Sure I've been thrown in the river a few times in my love life. And you can bet I splished and splashed every last person on the riverbank who was trying to sunbathe. ;-) hee-hee
