Caught In-between

by Phronesus Disegno
 Age Group: Adult

There was once a beautiful place Where people could express their heart Bringing order to meaning with grace With the most beautiful works of art With happiness extending above Or with pain reaching far below With expressions of genuine love, Anything that could help them grow.
Then one came along with a paintbrush Dipped the tip of it in my pallete And was in somewhat of a mad rush To paint some strange voting ballot; I could sense anger from this person But I didn't know what it was all for, I had hoped that nothing would worsen So I went on just like before.
I don't mind sharing, you see So I ignored it and painted on After that I was left to be, For I thought that it all had moved on. But then, others came along For they too had opinions to tell I thought they might sing me a song But they smudged up my pallete as well.
To perpetuaute it as it were And the tension started to grow With my canvas now smudged to a blur For some meaningless quid pro quo. And now I take two steps back Wondering, why must I be in-between Of two warring parties that lack The restraints to prevent being mean?
I myself have had need to cry out; Not a soul knew to whom 'twas directed But it's different to hear people shout Stuck between stronghold walls erected. I believe I understand all of this For it's happened to me before; I've witnessed theft of an innocent's bliss In the name of proclaiming a war!
If they hadn't have dipped in my pallete I'd have calmly stepped back and watched Now they seem to be passing out ballots All I wanted was my painting unsplotched; But now I know what's going on For some of us are quite smart; Leave me out of such brawl and brawn! Both sides lost when they touched my art.
Author's Notes: A poem with a lot of symbolism. The "art" is actually the sense of well-being, harmony and happiness. The "pallete" is the source from which such things originate. And the "canvas" is the end result. The "voting ballot" was of course the attempt for one side to gain favor from outsiders over his opponent.
Have you ever had two friends who liked you, but disagreed with each other and tried to get you to take sides and settle their problems for them?
I told them, just for trying to force me in the middle, that I wouldn't be friends with either of them until they could be freinds with each other again. How dare anyone call themself my friend and then ask me to choose who I like better just because of some petty insignificant disagreement that had nothing to do with me in the first place.
The end result? The one who told me I wasn't a friend because I refused to take his side, has been dismissed from my life. The other, who apologized and admitted I should have never been forced into the middle, is someone I can remain friends with.
