To Be Popular

by Phronesus Disegno

Age Group: Adult

How does it feel to be popular?
I wondered.

My close friends wondered too.

So I made myself known.
Danced with everyone who asked.
Enjoyed all of the attention.

My close friends still wondered.
But now they wondered
Where I was.

Everyone wanted my attention.
But they wanted it for their own.
Suddenly I felt spread too thinly.

My close friends still wondered.
They thought I was lost
In all the glamour.

Too much attention.
Too many demands.
And even, too much heartache.

My close friends still wondered.
They knew I needed them
To stay near.

All these other people,
Go away! I'm not an object!
Enough is enough.

So my close friends asked,
How did it feel to be popular?

I'm so glad they remained with me
Long enough to ask...
For the others have all disappeared.

And I would answer them,
If only I weren't
Completely and totally...

Exhausted.

Author's Notes: I wrote this back in 1997, about four years after a time that I consider to be when my life actually begun in terms of living it according to my own terms.

I began a country/western dance class in May 1994, something I had always wanted to learn how to do. I liked it so much that I remained in the class for over six years by which time I had practically become one of the instructor's "seasoned vet" assistants.

Initially I loved all the attention I was getting until I realized after a couple years that people were starting to view me as a dancing partner object instead of a friend, such that after about ten or eleven dances in a row, when I was out of breath, people would be insulted if I declined an invitation to dance with them rather than understanding that I was getting worn out, almost as if our friendship depended on whether I danced with them. And in the meantime, my real friends were feeling neglected because I was spending too much time on the dance floor away from them.

I gained much popularity in that scene but ultimately decided it was a bit too much effort for me to maintain. In the end, I was disappointed to realize that some people were just "riding my coattail" so to speak. But as with most of my stories, this one has a happy ending. I did make some very wonderful friends, and now after a few years of taking a break from dancing all the time, it has once again become special to have an occasional dance with friends who have always liked me for the person I am on the inside.
