Never Forgotten!

by Annalegra

[WVox Sponsor]

Age Group: Adult

And so they found her, Nancy May,
As underneath the hay she lay,
Where she had hid just yesterday
Hoping they would go away.

“Witch” they’d called her, “Witch”, they’d said
And dragged her screaming from her bed.
She knew they’d burn her, burn her dead
And so she struggled free and fled.

She ran till she could run no more,
And fell down on the hay room floor
Her breathing rasping, feet so sore
From running till her soles were raw.

Inside the hay she hid that night
And lay there wondering at her plight.
She lay till dark turned into light
If they came again she’d up and fight.

And came they did, upon the dawn.
They came soon after day was born,
Found her at the crack of dawn
And dragged her fighting, clothing torn.

She fought till she could fight no more
She told them it just was herb lore,
She only healed, no harm she bore.
They shut her up and locked the door.

Later, on that summer’s day
They came again for Nancy May.
They came and dragged her clean away
To where the burning fuels lay.

They tied her to the wooden post
Where they began to brag and boast,
About the Witch that they would roast
And round they gathered, quite the host.

She felt the flames as up they grew,
Burning fiercely, round her drew.
Then felt at peace, because she knew
She was not guilty, she was true.

And as the flames licked at her skin
She looked out through the flickering
And saw the faces of her kin
She knew then that they’d never win.

She realized that although she’d die,
Those that followed would ask why,
And they in turn would weep and cry
For the suffering years gone slowly by.

And they would guard the future days
With secrecy and whispered ways.
They’d make sure that the memories stayed
Of those who’d died like Nancy May.
