Evening Lake

The haunting cry of unseen loon,
Cuts through the mist that shrouds the lake.
From it’s kin there’s no reply
The loon again, it’s call does make.
Tiny splashes by the reeds
Give notice of the fish below.
They lurk in leafy, shadowed shallows
Far from waters gentle flow.
Great heron knowing they are there
Poised, like statue, still as still,
Waiting, patiently gazing down,
And quick as lightening make his kill.
Again, the loon calls out forlorn,
Cry muted in the drifting mist.
And lapping, little breeze made waves
Tumble gently on the shore they kiss.
Mallards squabble, flapping wetly
Chasing, noisy in their ire,
And still the loon cries out in vain
Soprano, lost, without it’s choir.
Timid deer, appear as ghosts
To drink their fill at water’s edge.
Then vanish, silent, ears a-twitching
To their trails through reeds and sedge.
Once more the loon sends lonely greeting
Echoing ‘cross the hidden deeps.
Calling through the damping mist
As outward to the shore it creeps.
And as the evening turns to twilight,
The loon sends out a final cry,
And in the distance, clearly heard
Another of it’s kind replies.
Night washes over lake and land,
And loon hands over calls to owl.
The blackness draping over all
As Mothers cloak, complete with cowl.
