Individuality

The wind like bitter ice cuts through
The shadows that enfold the world;
As rain that pours soaks all that’s true,
A winter night’s unfurled.
Enfolded in the teeming masses
Are few who strive to be
More than what is taught in classes,
But the chains let no one free.
Wear the mask you are assigned;
Play your obedient part;
Dare not to leave the path aligned,
For a new and shadowed start.
Try a new and darkened path
That leads a winding maze
Through the conformed and squirming bath
Of all identical craze.
Dance amidst the rain and freeze,
Laugh at all the lemmings
Who run off cliffs with such an ease –
For them, their start’s their ending.
Sing the song that has no tune;
Run through clouded skies –
Ignore the sun, embrace the moon
Whose soft light tells no lies.
Drift to sleep ‘neath silver stars
As their lullaby they mutter;
Love all, and it will be ours –
For our moves are unique flutters.
Allow winter’s unknown to fill
The emptiness of the sun.
When the darkness kills the chill,
You know the war is one.

Author's Notes: I wrote this while I was thinking just how amusing it was that so many people in high school try to mimic each other. Everyone says that they want to be different, but everyone in each little clique - while they dress different than other cliques - dress exactly alike. They act exactly alike. They talk exactly alike. I've always taken pride in the fact that I truly am different. I know there are other people out there as different as I am, and I know that there are people out there who want to be more of an individual. Hopefully this poem will entertain and give a message.
