What Holds Us Back

It’s hard to write a letter
I cannot write a song
The words that flow within my heart
Have stilled themselves too long.
The painful birth of poetry
That comes to all the smart, at best
Have given only words that say
“there’s a rock inside my heart.”
Anyone can write they have
A rock inside their heart.
That blocks the flow, that stuff of life,
Forbidding it to start.
Its not a rock that hinders me
From singing from my soul.
There lives a whisper deep inside
That burns me like a coal.
It burns its shades of doubting deep
Within my red-lined walls.
And the voice that speaks its words to me
Is too full of fear to call.
Not just the poet has this bug
That gnaws through the gifts that lie
Underneath the rock that sits over
The beauty that we hide.
It heartens me to know that others
Experience the same
Hidden hurt and hesitation
That leave our gifts so tame.
