The Last Dragon

by Annalegra
 [WVox Sponsor]
 Age Group: Adult

The dragon lifted up her head, And in the distance gazed. She sniffed the air and snorted And shifted where she lazed.
A twinge of pain ran through her, Like the sharp edge of a sword, And she rose to stand up slowly Then in lament she roared.
The wisdom of the ages She carried in her heart. The burden was so heavy But of her, it was a part.
She’d known the change was coming, She’d sensed it long ago. A tear fell from her golden eye, Her head hung down so low.
She remembered the beginnings, When all was fresh and new And how throughout the many years, The wisdom in her grew.
She remembered other dragons, That she’d known and loved so well. She’d shed tears of sorrow for them As one by one they fell.
She knew her end was coming soon, She’d lived too many years, But the sadness of it grieved her As she wept more dragon tears.
There was nothing left here for her, All she’d known was gone, The world was changing round her She had tarried here too long.
Once more she raised her giant head, And looked up to the sky, She felt a glow flow through her Just once more she would fly!
And so amid a shower of scales, She leapt into the air, And soared just like she used to And rode the wind with care.
She flew among the mountain tops, And skimmed the forest heights, She rode the thermals with the birds She flew all day and night.
And when at last her strength was spent, She landed near her lair. She lay down on the mossy ground, And breathed the morning air.
Content within the knowledge That her worldly time was done She sighed the last known dragon sigh, And watched the rising sun.
And as the orb rose higher And filled the skies she’d soared She breathed the last known dragon breath And welcomed deaths sharp sword.
