Night of the dead

by Annalegra

 Age Group: Adult

The dark clouds skitter across the night sky, As the children excitedly chatter on by, Dressed in costumes gauche and garish, The little ones knock on the doors of the parish.
Carrying buckets and bags for the sweets, As front doors are opened they yell “Trick or Treat!” And smiling at the grand size of their hoards They traipse through the cobwebs and decorative gourds.
They spy many creatures out with them tonight. Aliens, monsters, such terrible sights. Princesses too, are there in the midst, Along with fake witches who cackle and hiss.
But also abroad on this night of the dead, Are those who will honor those gone on ahead. Those folks who may set a spare place at their table And invite those who’ve passed, to come if they’re able.
They’ll give thanks, for the final harvest complete, Say farewell to old year, the new one they’ll greet. A night tinged with sadness but also with cheer As the true Witches welcome the coming New Year.
The kids are now sleeping, their costumes away, As they dream of the candy they’ll eat the next day. The Witches too, have gone to their beds, Knowing they’ll wake up with very sore heads.
The candy hunts over, and Halloween’s done, The parties have finished and all have had fun. Samhain’s finished, the New Year is unfurled, And the spirits who came have returned to their world.
The candles were snuffed when their flames flickered low, And tomorrow the decorations will go. The pumpkins and cornstalks will no more be seen ’Til one year from now, on the next Halloween.
