A Thinker Nearby

There is a tree standing beside me
As I sit, seeing it for the first time.
The tree stands straight, but alone
Other trees are distant due to the positioning
of where they were planted.
His thin trunk, though straight, flexes
Towards the side where all his branches rest.
Maybe they were blown to one side by the wind,
Did the breeze pull each limb down towards the earth?
The leaves look down, the motions of a head
Viewing the ground in solemn concentration.
There is space upon the ground surrounding
The lone thinker for other tree to be planted
But he is alone, surrounded by cement.
The other trees nearby look distant too
They are green, beautiful, but isolated.
People give bare acknowledgement of their presence
Seeing tall, green shapes in peripheral vision,
But no one actually sees them.
Because they are planted in a mall parking lot.
Author's Notes: A tree without a forest always touches melancholy for me. I wrote this after I met a beautiful pagan girl with whom I had a wonderful conversation that left me feeling encouraged, but alone. The trees spirit, too, determined, but sad. We must never forget the trees.
