First Harvest

Midsummer, Lammas, wheel sliding towards Yule
Energy fades with the descending sun
Plants still stretching up, reaching for their fuel
Golden rays falling on fields turned to dun
Wheat and corn and rye fill the growing fields
Into golden grains, they convert the light
Transferring the power to fertile yields
Preserving it against the yearly night
Golden grains harvested and baked as bread
The strength of the sun contained in the loaves
Warmth of life sustained through the winter dread
Harvest stores: the greatest of treasure troves
Lammas, the first harvest celebration
The first month of winter preparation
Author's Notes: Written for Oaken Circle's 2009 Lammas ritual held at North Park, Pittsburgh.
