Eye on the Sky

by Stewart Bitkoff
 Age Group: Adult

Eye on the Sky One morning, Turtle was sitting beside the road and complaining about the sun’s heat. “Feel how hot the sun is. Perhaps I should return to my burrow and wait until later in the day, when it is cooler, to search for flies.”
Just then a Grasshopper came hip-hopping-along singing this song.
“The sun is warm and the day is filled with Grace. God is in heaven and everything is in its Place.”
When Grasshopper saw his friend, he stopped to talk. “Turtle isn’t this a glorious day? Not a cloud in the sky and I am on my way to see my brother who lives in the distant meadow. Who could ask for more?’
Turtle replied, “Perhaps you like this weather but I am hot. I have this heavy shell to carry and I cannot move as easily as you.”
Suddenly out of the sky a large crow swooped down, caught Grasshopper in its beak and carried him away. Quickly, for a Turtle that is, he turned around and scurried back to his burrow for safety. As Turtle scanned the sky to see if the crow was coming back for him, Turtle lamented, “Poor Grasshopper, I will miss him, but he got what he deserved; always trusting and never suspicious of others. He should have kept an eye on the sky!”
The Lesson
Most often, we blame our troubles on bad luck, other people, or Deity/Karma. For every one, life is a series of ups and downs. While it is a good idea to keep a look out for potential problems, we cannot become so concerned with bad things happening, that we loose opportunities to be joyful and spontaneous. Remember no matter who you are, one day life will jump up and bite you, and we need this contrast to fully enjoy the positive.
