Heaven

Heaven as a destination is, on the whole, overrated
Though paved with gold and pearly-gated,
A picturesque celestial nation.
The clouds are a sight to behold, they say,
But little else is there to see
And for a change of scenery
The saints would hang up their haloes and stray.
There's nothing left of the world we know
But an endless velvet green
Where righteous souls in L.L. Bean
Tee off in a sanctimonious glow;
And though there are no sand traps or water hazards to avoid,
Yet still at times one feels annoyed by the challenges it lacks.
For there's no such thing as suffering in that novacaine existence,
And from their Lord a little distance the angels often long to wing;
For nothing would thrill them half so much
As a good heartbreak, a stomachache, or rheumatic fever
--though just a touch.
