Ride

by Sorbus
 Age Group: Adult

One night I woke and the moon was bright, so bright I could not stay. I did not remember falling asleep, for it was night, but so bright, the colors on the trees could be seen.
I left my room, my things thought dear, and went down to the door. I thought I’d heard a call, A familiar voice so dear to me, and he was there, my pale horse. There he stood at the step. From little wishbone snip on his nose, to the dark scar on the his shoulder. Nodding at me, impatient to be off.
No saddle or bridle was needed. This ride together. I mounted and was off. Past familiar fields we know to roads traveled in the past together, through forest and field, marsh and shore. We rode on. Leaving behind tears, fears, years, Past the fields we know to others even further afield. An exit to eternal summer gold. I’d tell you, but you’ll see them yourself, when you take your moonlite ride.
Just remember of me that I ride. I ride on with a smile on my lips, Eyes bright and happy. I ride.
Author's Notes: This is a Samhain poem about traveling to the Summerlands. A friend is currently setting it to music. I had not originally written it for submission, but it came out so well I thought I'd share.
