Irish Melancholy

The Irish are a friendly lot
as anyone can tell.
Occasionally their melancholy
makes them morose as hell.
What makes the Irish wit and charm
take such a drastic turn?
Pull up a chair and listen well,
the secret you will learn.
The Irish soul, as you may know,
was torn in two at birth.
Their sadness was so great you see,
the Gods gave extra mirth.
Their eyes can smile, their laughter roar,
their wit and charm beguile,
and when they cheer a lonely heart
it always brings a smile.
But when the heart in need of cheer
is theirs, they are alone
and so they search year after year
in hopes to find their own.
The other half of rended soul
is searching for the same.
Until the souls are one complete
it drives them all insane!
The madness spreads and takes control
throughout their waking days.
Obsessed with love they search in vain
for love's elusive ways.
And so....they drink to ease the pain
of what they must endure
and say it's medicine, self-prescribed
for afflictions "de la coeur".
But when it hits them like a stone
that they may never find
the other half of their own soul
their sadness then unbinds.
It's then they wander throughout their lives
morose as they can be
and sometimes joke about their state
and call it Irish Melancholy.
