Poet's Soul

Living in this world today
I feel I'm overcome by poverty.
Lately, much to my dismay
I find I'm counted as a casualty.
Empty days born of wasted time,
turning to years, begin to take their toll.
just because I don't have a dime
that doesn't mean I've lost my poet's soul.
All my friends think I'm insane
but they don't know the hell that I've been through.
They weren't there to feel the pain
and so my mental state's been misconstrued.
Let them stand there and persecute
a man who tries to keep his self control.
Even though I am destitute
that doesn't mean I've lost my poet's soul.
Living like a castaway.
I need to find a place to rest my head.
Hand to mouth and day by day
I keep on trying just to get ahead.
Sleeping in the street
but never giving up to reach my goal.
So, I walk to a different beat,
I always listen to my poet's soul.
