Burning Times

Catholic power greedy for riches & rule
Compliance was demanded
And when the inquisition was formed
They acted very underhanded
Pope Innocent the VIII
Instructed Dominicano monks
To publish an instruction manual
So Pagans, they could debunk
The Hammer of the Witches
Was to be the inquisitions guide
It became most influential
Its reasoning is why so many died
Innocents burned or hanged
And nature worshipers as well
As the Pope at the time suggested
They would go straight to "hell"
Torture was the rule
For anyone accused
Shaved and pricked with needles
By this the inquisition was amused
Thumbscrews were instilled
As well as hot oil and the rack
Boots which broke their legs
Beaten and starved so they would crack
Hot acid poured on their hands
Hot pokers everywhere
There was no limit to the cruelty
The accused had a lot to fear
Rumors were set forth
And panic did prevail
On non-christians blame was sited
They were placed under a darkened veil
Mass hysteria ran rampid
Where lacked th churches strength
The witch hunts came and went
In varying degrees of length
Hundreds of thousands of victims; woman
Didn't dare plant an herb or a spice
Because if they were accused
No excuse would suffice
Forgone secrets almost forgotten
On the brink of an abrupt end
Pagan symbol's meanings were perverted
Distorted messages the church did send
Prejudice, ignorance, fear, and greed
Are what fueled these midieval events
Hopefully history won't repeat itself
And we won't go backwards into decent.

i truly hope this poem is something that is enjoyed, even though the event itself is not enjoyable.
