Let Hope To Sleep

LET HOPE TO SLEEP
I drift peacefully in coaxing cobalt waters
Unaware of dying
Ice prickling my skin
A smile when the pain comes
In bitter frozen waters I grow numb
A warm current stirs
What commotion is this?
My emotions betray me
And warm the waters still.
What sunlight dares to pierce
My slumber toward ultimate death?
A forearm emerges through the murky surface
A wretched fool, I grasp it
I was at peace! I was dying!
Let hope to sleep!
My body thrust onto the life raft
Mouth to mouth breathes pink into lifeless skin
Fresh from amniotic fluid I gasp for air
And open my eyes to see him adore me there
If I am a fool, than surely he is mad
Curse the sunlight that blinds and comforts me
I feel myself embraced
Yearning to be alive and still half dead
He enters me
Paddles jolt the heart
Great, now I’m beating again
Only more dying to be done
I curse at my surrender to the living
Can’t blame a girl for trying
Revived, I am released
A fish in the sea
He smiles at me, my scales shimmer
Would that I could avoid that life-line
When next it comes
Let hope to sleep!
