Fear of the Dark

by Tay
 Age Group: Adult

My name is Helen, and you’ll never believe What happens at night—oh, the things you can see! When the shadows are writhing, they whisper my name When darkness and light are one in the same When they turn out the light and I’m left all alone When everyone’s quiet and the nurses are gone That’s when they visit, that’s when they call That’s when they slither and slink and, yes, crawl The shadows are more than just shadows at night They’re liquid and solid, they’re black and they’re white
I cannot resist them and I’ll never be able Sweet dreams are something from a children’s fable I squirm and I wiggle—I’ll make my escape! Before the shadows get here, before they take shape! What’s this? Am I bound? Can I even sit up? What’s this? Should I call out for Nurse Schlup? Too late! They are here, yes, they have arrived Come here to rape and to skin me alive Come here to shred and to rip and to maim Come here to torture and set me aflame
I call for the nurses, I thrash and I scream I pull at my bonds, they rip at the seams I tear at my flesh, they’ve gotten inside! No way to escape and no way to hide They’re ripping me open; I swear that it’s true How would you feel if it happened to you? Blood in my lungs, and blood on my hands Blood from my ovaries, blood on these bands I’m bleeding inside, does nobody care? Help me, I scream, is nobody there?
The nurses are here, the shadows grow still I’m screaming and screaming, my voice is too shrill They think I’m crazy, they retie my bands The only markings I bear are those from my hands They give me a shot so that I can’t move They don’t believe me, I’ve no way to prove That the shadows are waiting, they’re inside my head You can’t leave me alone in this hospital bed! But they leave me alone, and they turn out the light Now I’m truly a victim to the things in the night.
